00:00 Navajo, American Indian: Ribbon Dance: The unpitched instruments in this dance music are typical of the sounds used to accompany Native American chant melodies. The drum and shaker or rattle were products of their immediate habitat; the drum was made from stretched animal skin and the shaker was made from beads strung around a gourd. The vocal quality is nasal, projecting easily through the percussion accompaniment. The melody is shared by a leader and two other singers who join in on the repeated phrases. The melodic pattern is a sophisticated balance of vocal call-response.
